Program Description

The Instructional Innovation Internship (I3) program offers opportunities for Yale students to participate in the development and support of technology-enhanced instructional materials. Students who undertake internships work closely with instructors, instructional technologists, librarians, and teaching specialists to design, develop and support digital teaching resources for use in the Yale curriculum.

The program consists of two phases. Summer internships involve working in small project teams to design and develop new digital teaching resources based on faculty-initiated proposals. During the Fall and Spring semesters, interns provide support for faculty in Arts and Sciences who require assistance with technology-enhanced teaching. Some Interns will be appointed for the summer; others for the academic year. For more information about I3 program, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The Instructional Innovation Internship program is intended to stimulate and support diverse and pedagogically significant applications of digital technology to teaching and learning across the Yale curriculum. Interns, through their interactions with technology and instructional staff, will have opportunities to learn and to utilize technical and pedagogic skills while designing materials that improve the teaching and learning experience for their fellow students.For more information about I3 program, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Instructional Innovation Internship (i3) Summer Development Projects: Information for Faculty

Introduction

Instructional faculty at Yale are making increasing use of digital technologies to create innovative solutions to challenging pedagogical problems.  Yale’s Instructional Innovation Internship (i3) program offer instructors the opportunity to access staff and student resources to help them develop digital teaching resources for integration into their upcoming courses. In turn, it provides Yale students with the opportunity to actively participate in the development of educational materials and resources for the benefit of the Yale community and beyond. Please see the i3 website for more information about the program.

The program expects to support 5-10 projects during the summer of 2008, and we invite faculty who will be teaching courses in Fall 08 or Spring 09 to submit a proposal to the I3 program.

Nature of the supported projects

Project proposals should be driven by specific pedagogical challenges that might benefit from online or other digital technologies.

For example,

  • computer animations to help students visual complex dynamical processes;
  • access to searchable databases of images, audio, or video to enhance student research and study of course-related materials;
  • tools to increase the effectiveness of classroom presentations and interactions in meeting the needs of large lecture courses;
  • interactive multimedia and data visualization tools that could help students study and contextualize complex datasets, texts, or visual materials
  • collaborative workspaces and tools to facilitate group work and communication.

Each summer course project will be supported for up to 35 hours per week for 12 weeks, and may include as many as four Interns. Each project will be supervised by a staff member from the Instructional Technology Group, who will bring in resources from Library, Graduate Teaching Center, and others as needed. A firm requirement for any proposal is that the instructor who will be teaching the target course be available over the summer for on-campus project meetings. At the conclusion of their course, instructors are expected to contribute a brief written assessment of the impact their project had on their class.

During the summer, Fellows engage in faculty-initiated projects that involve development of digital teaching materials, the creation and prototyping of new teaching tools, and other initiatives that bring new digital resources into undergraduate and graduate courses. Faculty proposals will be invited and reviewed during the February and March of the preceding academic year. For those proposals that are selected, a project team consisting of the instructor, one or more Interns and a staff project manager will be assembled to complete the project over the summer.

Academic-Year Internship

During the Fall and Spring semesters year, Interns are available for consultation during a set of regular hours as well as on an appointment basis. These consultations are intended to address well-defined course support issues, such as digitization of materials, assistance with CLASSESv2 and other online technologies, and help with small-scale digital materials development. As resources allow, academic year Interns also assist staff with longer-term projects, documentation, and outreach activities. The number of hours available to any individual course is 15 per semester. These services are available to any faculty who offer a course in Yale College or the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
